About Us

About Us
Jacobs Law has a strong history representing the people of Ellesmere Port and Chester with the firm beginning as Jacobs & Co’ back in October 1986.

Its founder, Maurice Jacobs, had practiced in Ellesmere Port for many years prior to that as a partner in Oliver & Co. He was a well known and well loved figure in the town with his deep gravelly voice and constant cigar and with a legal brain second to none. He dealt with all sorts of cases – including the aftermath of the Isle of Man fire in the 1970s – and also sat as a District Judge in the Chester County Court Sadly, Maurice – known to even his closest friends as “Mr Jacobs” – passed away in 2005 having retired from the firm in 1996.

The line-up has changed little over the years, Miss Sue Harrop took over as senior partner and only retired in 2012 after a 35 years with the firm, having established herself as an extremely competent Family Lawyer, also sitting as a District Judge.

Robin Boag, an already experienced Criminal Lawyer, joined in 1990, retiring in 2012 but continuing as a Consultant and a Higher Court Advocate for a number of years after that.

Miss Sue Burton has been a Partner since 1989 , overseeing and developing the Private Client department, property matters, wills and specialising in assisting her Elderly Clients.

Steven Alis has worked for over 26 years in the legal world, firstly with De Cordova Alis and Filce and then with Jacobs Solicitors dealing with a wide range of matters and also sitting as an Immigration Judge.

We have a very well qualified legal team to provide assistance and advice with a range of matters.

Priding ourselves on our loyal staff who have been with us for many years, we actually care for clients and our local community.

Magistrates' Court Fees

It is difficult to quantify the cost of your case until we obtain the prosecution papers and determine how long the case will take. In particular, we need to know whether you will plead guilty or not guilty, how many hearings are likely, and if it is a trial how many court sessions the trial will last for. Typically, our fees are as follows

For a Guilty Plea:
For a plea in mitigation – a guilty plea with mitigation put forward and the hearing completed in the same session: £350 plus VAT;

For a plea in mitigation – a guilty plea with mitigation put forward and the hearing completed later the same day but into a different session: £500 plus VAT;

For a guilty plea which is then adjourned for Pre-Sentence Reports, meaning you have to come back a different day, £750 plus VAT;

For a Not Guilty Plea:
Listed for a half day trial, £1,000 plus VAT;

Listed for a full day’s trial, £1,250 plus VAT;

For a not guilty plea, listed for more than a day’s trial, our fees will be substantially more, and we will need to evaluate what work exactly needs doing.

In addition to those fees, disbursements such as travel to and from the court will need to be added to the total. If your case involves further applications to be made on your behalf such as a submission of exceptional hardship or special reasons there will be further costs which you will incur.

Crown Court Fees

Crown court cases are determined by a number of additional factors to magistrates matters. This again makes it is difficult to quantify the cost of your case. Prices for all crown court matter will be determined on a case by case basis upon request.
